The Mahler 1 of band excerpts, the opening chaconne from Gustav Holst’s First Suite in E-Flat, is deceptively challenging due to its exposed nature. Less so in a performance setting with the inclusion of the euphonium(s) and string bass, the challenge then becomes transparency and intonation. In the context of an audition, take a full breath following the low B-Flat to give yourself a fighting chance in the second half and the final E-flat. If you ever want to be humbled, try playing “real,” sit down music on a sousaphone. One of the unique parts of this job is the pragmatism of it all - though the choice of instrument is generally left to the tuba player, we often decide between concert horn or sousaphone based on venue, job, and certainly weather.
