Don't postpone joy. Nicole Guimaraes and I went on a beautiful hike this morning. Although we didn't bring our pup, Comet with us, we had her in our hearts ❤️

What a great etude to get you to blow through fast note changes! This is an etude I practice every which way. This happens to be a fast take of it, but in contrast to this, a slower and slurred version of it is really what primes our body and mind to what the air should be doing whenever playing fast. I’m a big proponent of practicing opposites, not only in style, but also in articulation - slurred, Da syllable, and T syllable articulation. Has anyone tried playing Rochut/Bordogni tongued while still maintaining its melismatic qualities? Give it a try!!!

I nearly walked right past this unassuming house had my walking partner not pointed it out to me.
Here’s a hint, check out the lyres on the railing... alright here’s one more hint, the previous resident was often called “The March King.” #tubaplayer #tuba #getyourheadoutofthesand #themarchking

Can anyone name this concerto? I was recently introduced to it as I surveyed pieces to play on CC tuba. What are you playing on big tuba!?

Who are YOU outside of music?

Music can and often becomes the very essence of ourselves. After all, how can one become "the bests" without making sacrifices?

The plain truth is that music is a sonic representation of the artist. If you are only partial, singularly focused, secluded, or seduced by just your sound, your music will sound as such. When it's time to practice, practice with all your focus; the same can be said about time spent away from the instrument.

I've kept aquariums nearly my entire life, with the first one gifted to me by my father, Jose Guimaraes, for my second birthday in Brasil. I've kept everything from easy to care for livebearers like mollies, guppies, and platys to the more exotic SPS (Soft Polyp Stony) saltwater reef tanks. While at the Pacific Music Festival in Japan, I made it a point to visit the Sumida Nature Aquarium in Tokyo, where I got to see the incredible works of Takashi Amano. When not behind the mouthpiece, you can find me reading about fishes, aquatic plants, and habitat parameters to reproduce species-specific biotopes.

In short, take care of your entire beings.

This is one of my Nature Aquariums with a thriving colony of Yellow King Kong shrimp.

Hi everyone! I wanted to make this post as a friendly reminder that the materials for the upcoming US Navy Band tuba audition are due by February 19th.

There is still time to make those recordings!

Even though John Clifford Heed’s “In Storm and Sunshine March” is not one of the excerpts for this audition, it is fun to play!

Excerpts for the recorded round are Vaughan William’s “Toccata Marziale,” Paul Hindemith’s “Symphony in Bb,” Leonard Bernstein’s “Symphonic Dances from West Side Story,” Franz Liszt’s “Mazeppa,” and everyone’s favorite, Phil Snedecor’s etude #4 from “low Etudes for Tuba.”

You may find the music and additional audition information by visiting navyband.navy.mil

Good luck!

Happy end of 2020 everyone! The year was long and presented challenges at every turn, but we somehow managed to persevere through it all. I figured I'd do one more recording to close out this chapter and bring in the new year with good juju. May 2021 bring happiness, health, and prosperity to all of you and your families, God bless.

I decided to record my way through the Rochut book after being inspired by Toby Oft's recordings... nearly three years ago 🤦‍♂️. Who knew it would be such a laborious endeavor!? Nonetheless, I get enough out of this exercise to march on.

What does the future of tuba music look like?

This musical sample is a work entitled 'Distant Contours' by composer and cellist Eric Adamshick, which I commissioned in 2016. I first heard his music while attending a friend's recital. His musical language immediately sparked my interest, and conversations about a commission began almost instantly. Several months later, I received a message from Eric saying that the first draft was ready for me to see. We met at a local coffee shop in New Haven, CT, and barely able to contain my excitement, I began leafing through the pages. To my surprise, the first draft looked and sounded nothing like his previous compositions.

Those of you who know me well know that I can be blunt at times, and this was no exception. "What happened?" I asked him. His response was something along the lines of "I wrote what I thought a tuba would play." I asked him to go back to the drawing board and instead write a piece one of his cello friends would enjoy playing. 'Distant Contours' was the result.

While I observe other instruments making strides towards a stronger musical message, many of us tuba players continue to perpetuate gimmicks. Newer compositions appear to demand the performers to play in the extreme low register for effect, play the highest of notes for no musical reason, and subject our listeners to an ever-increasing show of unbalanced dynamic force. Skills that are best used as a spice, have somehow become the main course.

Why should our instrument be viewed as something else? What are we doing to either break misconceptions or perpetuate them? #tuba #tubaplayer #tubist #tubista #lowbrass #trombone #music
